A tinge of excitement bursts from nowhere as the first tug jolts your fishing line. The rush of adrenaline races throughout your body. With weight on one end of the line resisting, you are now personally connected to an unknown force. It’s still hidden below the water’s surface. You continue to pull, determined, hand over hand, your heartbeat churning with intensity. Curiosity builds as your latest discovery rises slowly from the deep…
MAGNET FISHING
My latest and most peculiar adventure – a thrill beyond traditional fishing!
I first learned about magnet fishing while browsing a magazine article. I became more interested after reading how people were ‘fishing’ for objects that lay unnoticed, hidden, underwater. I was so intrigued I purchased my very own magnet fishing kit.
Since then, I became less interested in landing that trophy smallmouth bass from the lake or reeling in that 4 lb. brown trout from a Pocono Mountain creek.
I started fishing for something more valuable…
For my first attempt at magnet fishing, I dipped the magnet into the waters of a local stream while floating on its surface.
I had simple hopes of attracting at the least, a few expensive fishing lures. Within a few minutes spent in the deeper water, I came across some mysterious heavy ‘tugs’, but only retrieving a few scrap-metal parts. But as the day progressed, I continued downstream and pulled in a few more interesting finds.
You never know what lurks at the bottom of a body of water!
NO ROD and REEL. NO SLIMY BAIT. NO SMELLY FISH. BUT MAYBE…JUST MAYBE… SOMETHING OF VALUE
IT’S EASY!
You drop this very strong magnet into water so as to attract metal objects that lie hidden, inconspicuously, at the bottom.
You can ‘fish’ from a boat, a bridge, a dock, a kayak or like me…from a floatable tube. You can slowly work your way across small streams, the edges of a lake or river, a backyard pond or the ocean. Who knows what hidden treasures rest undetected, waiting to be discovered from the depths of our waters?
MAGNET FISHING ESSENTIALS – This is all you need…
A NEODYMIUM MAGNET
This magnetic force is stronger than you think. In fact, neodymium magnets are the strongest type of permanent magnets available on the commercial market. I must admit I wasn’t convinced such a small magnet could be so powerful.
I HAD TO SEE FOR MYSELF Below is a 25 lb. cast iron weight attached to my neodymium magnet. Unbelievable. I wanted to attach another weight, but I wasn’t sure the supplied rope could handle the load without snapping!
If it’s made of metal, this fishing magnet will attract, attach, and allow you to haul in your prize.
ROPE
While rope is included with most magnet kits, eventually you may need to invest in a better rope line (you may need to pull in a heavy treasure chest of gold coins!). Personally, I am still using the original rope that came with my kit, however, there is much better rope for when I plan to upgrade. You can see it HERE.
GLOVES
I highly recommend using gloves when magnet fishing. Safety first.
Ever experience rope burn on your hands? It’s not pleasant.
Also, a good pair of gloves is essential when retrieving heavier or sharp items. I would suggest experimenting with the pair that comes with the kit. If the supplied pair doesn’t fit or you want better quality, check out this cut-proof, more comfortable pair…Click HERE

A SNORKEL MASK
Occasionally you may get your magnet lodged between some rocks or underwater brush. Or hopefully, the magnet will attach to something valuable – but still too heavy to pull in on your own. Either way, a decent snorkel mask (kit) will allow you to venture below the water’s surface and free the magnet or at least see what you’ve latched onto!
POLARIZED SUNGLASSES
If you’re a traditional fisherman, you most likely own a pair and realize the importance of these specialized glasses. Your eyesight is not only protected from the sun’s harmful reflections from the waters’ surface, but most times you can actually see into the water!
A 5 GALLON BUCKET
You will need a container to collect all your findings!
Finally…AN AFFORDABLE HOBBY
It doesn’t cost much to get started with magnet fishing. I purchased my first magnet fishing kit for about $30. The kit came with the basics: rope, gloves, and of course the neodymium magnet.
The ‘fun factor’ is worth much more than the investment!
So what are you waiting for? There’s a treasure trove of valuables waiting to be discovered from the depths of our waterways.
Good luck fishing…with a magnet!
Be safe,
