EVERY WOODFIRE NEEDS KINDLING AND THE PERFECT TOOL TO MAKE IT HAS ARRIVED. I bought this tool because I believed it would split perfect-sized wood strips for starting and maintaining all my woodfires. It does. But also, my days of trudging along the forest floors, bending over to collect and hand-break fallen tree branches is now a chore delegated to the kids.
WHAT DOES THIS TOOL DO? HOW DOES IT WORK?
This tool creates small slices and chunks of wood from larger pieces of firewood. Simply place the larger piece of firewood within the safety ring, then drive it down into the cutting edge and voila’, smaller bits and pieces of wood (kindling) are created…the perfect size for starting and rekindling any woodfire.
HERE’S HOW I USE IT
Of course I put the kindling tool to the test. I watched the videos, read the sales copy, but I still had to experience it for myself. Long story short, this tool is a workhorse. I ended up splitting a lot of nice- sized bits of wood, perfect for starting my woodfires.
I USED IT MY WAY…and it worked!
The two holes on the bottom of the casting are there for a reason…to fasten the unit and keep it secured while hammering firewood down into the cutting edge. But in the beginning, I wasn’t interested in permanently attaching the tool to anything.
SO I CAME UP WITH THIS: I used bungee cords strapped to a cinder block.
The bungees kept the tool from moving around when I struck the wood, and the cinder block was a nice base providing a solid foundation. Also, the cinder block allowed me to raise the tool to the right height. It’s important to make sure you’re comfortable in hitting the wood and at a position where you have the most power. I used a 2 lb. hand sledge for hitting the firewood into the tool.
WHY I LIKE THIS TOOL
IT’S ONE SOLID PIECE OF IRON…almost indestructible. I admit that I’ve abused this tool a few times while whacking a few gnarly wood chunks, but it’s still working as good as the first day I bought it. It is virtually maintenance-free. So far there’s been no need to sharpen the cutting edge after a year of use!
IT CAN BE USED ON-LOCATION…ANYWHERE. Indoors or outside in the woods. Once during bad weather, I set it up on a tarp inside my garage. Before I knew it, I had filled a few buckets with kindling for my fireplace. But most of the time you’ll find me splitting outdoors near my wood pile where it’s most convenient.
IT’S MUCH SAFER THAN SWINGING A CHOPPING AXE. In the past I’ve created kindling by using a hatchet, trying to cut slivers from existing logs. I had to hold the log steady with one hand while using my other hand to strike with the sharp edge of the hatchet. This is dangerous, especially after a few swings and misses. But with this kindling tool, the piece of wood to be cut is held steady by the top safety ring, with the cutting edge inside the unit, away from your hands.
NO MORE SCOURING THE WOODS FOR DRY TWIGS. I’ve spent too many years, and too much bending over, hand-breaking branches to store in buckets. Yes, I still enjoy perusing amongst the trees, enjoying quiet walks and the wildlife surrounding me. But nowadays, my sore back reminds me how often (how many years) I’ve been bending down for those small twigs and sticks from the forest floors. Using this ingenious tool has allowed me to make my own kindling and not have to search for it.

NOT INTERESTED IN CHOPPING YOUR OWN KINDLING?
That’s ok. With all of life’s chores constantly tapping your shoulder, you may have more important things to do. So here’s the easy way, and by far a lot less labor intensive…Fatwood by ECOSTIX. Their fatwood is a 100% all-natural firestick harvested from leftover stumps of pine trees. It is by far one of the best fire starters I’ve ever used. I highly recommend. I do admit I always keep a box of these on hand. They’re convenient to take on the road for starting all my campfires. It helps in that I don’t need to transport buckets’ full of my own kindling and more so, if the weather has been wet when I’m on location, searching and collecting for dry kindling can be a tedious task. Once again, it’s another Amazon’s Choice product. Check them out HERE.
Now go and get those fires started! With the Kindling Cracker and Fatwood, you should have all the kindling wood you need to properly start and maintain any wood fire.
