And finally, after countless prototypes crowded the workspace in my garage, I had achieved my goal, my purpose. I was confident I had created the perfect companion for any wood burning fire – indoors or out.

So here’s exactly what happened and how it all came to be…oh, but first…
WHY ON EARTH WOULD ANYONE NEED A TRANSPORTABLE FIREWOOD HOLDER?
I know, I sure as hell never imagined I would actually design something and name it the TFH-1, let alone have a need for it. But I had good reason for bringing my idea to life – and it ended up becoming one of the best solutions for holding firewood.
‘CONVENIENT – PORTABLE – FIREWOOD STORAGE’ were my first thoughts, and it grew from there.
and this is how it all started…
It wasn’t so much a problem as it was an inconvenience. At my former residence, I was fortunate to have multiple locations for burning fires. I burned all winter using the woodstove in my basement, but I also burned just as much in the warmer months too, outside at my firepit and chimenea. Needless-to-say, I burned year-round, enjoying fires indoors during the Winter months and outside in Spring, Summer and Fall.
SO HERE WAS MY ISSUE…I was in need of (I wanted) a safe and convenient firewood holder nearby all my burning locations. Because I was burning wood inside my home as well as outdoors, I was constantly having to fetch wood from distant woodpiles.
The TFH-1 became THE SOLUTION…
My initial design of the firewood holder was to make it light and medium-sized so I could easily relocate it from my woodstove to the chimenea or over to the firepit and back…wherever I was burning. It all started coming together after a few test builds. At the end, it was the perfect size too…small enough to NOT get in the way, but just the right size for holding a substantial amount of wood.
So HOW do you STACK YOUR FIREWOOD when CAMPING, RV’ing or at HOME?
THIS WAS A BONUS…I have to admit I initially didn’t plan for the TFH-1 to be mobile, that is, taken along to campsites, or traveling with RVers. But boom…mind blower! Because the unit was quick and easy to assemble and take apart, the firewood rack had a new, featured benefit…it was transportable!
BUT THERE’S A SECRET TOO
Here’s what I can tell you…When looking at the TFH-1, what you DON’T SEE is the close-tolerance dimensions of each part. This is one of the reasons why the parts easily slide and stay together. But the trick is how it secures itself once weight is placed onto the Bottom Support bars. I utilized my experience as a machinist to conceive the design and personally machine the parts for each prototype. Below I’m using an inside micrometer to double check the dimensions before packaging.
TRUTH BE TOLD
I would like to take credit for some of the other cool features that make up the TFH-1 but honestly, they somehow appeared out of nowhere when I was in the designing process. For instance, the way the firewood rack cleverly locked itself into place once logs were stacked inside – that was a welcomed find.
Another cool breakthrough was how the holder reacted to uneven surfaces. While I did choose to have each corner of the rack move independently, I was intrigued when I tested the TFH-1 on various uneven surfaces like decks, cement patios or pavers.
I noticed how well the entire unit adjusted and secured itself. The four corners of the holder settled in rather nicely with no worries of wobbling. Of course, this also made it perfect for use on rugged, uneven outdoor landscapes. This was a welcomed surprise.
IT COMES DOWN TO THIS
If you’ve got a woodstove, firepit, chimenea, or fireplace – you are burning wood.
