CAN THAT TREE HIT YOUR HOUSE?

NO DOUBT. TREES ARE ESSENTIAL TO LIFE AS WE KNOW IT.

They provide shade from the hot rays of the sun. They supply food and oxygen. Trees contribute raw materials for buildings, books and thousands of other products. They also add value to our homesteads by beautifying the landscape in and around our neighborhoods. But despite the many perks we enjoy from having those large, leafy, woody-massed plants occupying the space around our property, we must be realistic and know that they are prone to falling down. Unfortunately, trees can be unsafe, posing potential dangers that need to be addressed.

INSPECT THOSE TREES!

Take the time to evaluate the trees that are close to your home, or any other structure like a detached garage or storage shed. Those particular trees could be hazardous to your valuable property. Do you park your car underneath a tree that is slowly dying from an unknown disease? Or maybe your kids’ swing set in the backyard is sitting beneath a large branch waiting to fall with the next heavy rain. Hopefully all you may need to do is trim the tree of some dead or unwanted limbs. Maintain the tree now, before it costs you later… (btw, if you haven’t already, download our FREE “Trees We Need” e-book. Starting on page 157 of the book, it provides information on proper pruning and care for trees that “need attention”).

HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED TO ME:

Below is a picture of the tree that damaged my steel structure. I knew better. I should have felled it way before a windstorm blew it down. The tree was totally dead; its bark was dried out from the trunk on up and with no leaves and very few branches, it was doomed to fall. I walked past this tall, woody monstrosity just about every day for a year or so, telling myself “I’ll get to it when I have time”. Mother Nature beat me to it, she took the tree down and at my expense.

A pile of wood sitting on top of the ground.

If there are any trees located on or near your property, it would be wise to evaluate their condition. Are they slowly dying? Is the root system in solid ground? Are there dead branches waiting to fall and cause damage to what lies beneath?  Can that tree fall and damage your house?!

Before signing off, I’d like to provide a really cool tip that can be useful if you have trees on or near your property. This handy “tip” is called The Stick Trick. Along with graphics, it is explained in detail in the first issue of our Wood Burner Pro Newsletter. Be sure to check it out, the information is invaluable especially if you’re a homeowner.
