HOW TO ENJOY A SAFE, CREATIVE JOURNEY
Preparation is key for safe and successful hikes. Don’t be caught off guard as nature, no matter how beautiful and charming, can be unpredictable and unforgiving.
NOTEWORTHY TIPS and TOOLS for SAFE HIKING
As far as the essentials go, all you really need is a bottle of water and a good pair of walking shoes for a scenic walk around your local park, neighborhood, or country road.
But if you’re up for a challenge with a bit more adventure (this is where it really gets fun), plan an excursion to get lost in nature. The trails will be longer, the woods deeper and the spacious views more splendid. Who knows what you may come across?
When you come this close to wildlife, it really makes you wonder…
First, HIKING ESSENTIALS
As I’ve mentioned above, water is by far my most essential item. Staying hydrated is key to surviving any extended hike in the outdoors. You do not want to be caught without it.
Here’s my HIKING CHECKLIST (I saved the best for the end…)
CLOTHING – I always choose to dress in layers as my body temp, as well as the air temperature, is constantly changing. I almost never wear shorts, but I do recommend a rain poncho. Have you ever been caught in an unexpected shower…in the wilderness? Where do you take cover? I usually pack an extra pair of socks too. Trudging along a wilderness trail is no fun with wet, soggy feet.
NUTRITION – I’m not talking candy bars here. Nutritious snacks can taste just as yummy. They provide energy and can help deter any cravings until the hike is finished and a full course meal can be enjoyed.
ILLUMINATION – Yes, flashlights are useful, even in daylight hours. If you’re deep into a forest or simply exploring a cave or crevice, light becomes necessary. Personally, I carry a headlamp. I like to have my hands free when viewing something close or especially if the path I’m hiking turns dark.
HIKING POLES – They’re not just for old people! These walking poles are invaluable for any hiker whether strolling an open trail or attempting a rocky climb. Up and around boulders…down steep ravines or gullies…across trickling waterways…these poles balance and help pull your body along the most challenging terrain. An indispensable tool!
FIRST-AID – While it may not be necessary for a day hike, a first-aid kit is never a bad idea. At the least, I usually pack some sanitizing wipes just in case of a minor scrape or to clean my hands of dirt and germs.
CELL PHONE – Of course, our most indispensable tool as we all know. But be cautioned, you may not have cell service if you’re a mile or two deep into the amazing world of the outdoors. It’s always good to carry for emergencies and amazing pics!
HOW DO YOU CARRY ALL OF YOUR ESSENTIALS? A hiking backpack, of course. You will need something to safely and conveniently transport all your snacks, gadgets and clothing. As long as the material is lightweight, water and tear resistant, you’re sure to have no problem navigating through the toughest conditions.
And last but not the least! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS…
Make sure to take along your favorite playlist for all outdoor adventures! It’s the one reason why I enjoy hiking so much.
That’s right…MUSIC.
Listening to my choice of music while I’m exploring new and exciting trails is invigorating. It’s the best live video you will ever experience! I can think of only a few better feelings than having my favorite tunes playing in my head while the most gorgeous images of nature are in front of my eyes.
MY FAVORITE GADGETS FOR HIKING WITH MUSIC
MP3 PLAYER – Take note…your cell phone service may not reach the inner depths of Mother Nature’s endless curvy terrain. But no problem, as it’s now possible to store an entire music catalog on a compact device known as an MP3 player. With blue tooth capability, you can keep it safe in a pocket or backpack as your favorite tunes are broadcast to another cool and compact device…
A PORTABLE SPEAKER – Earbuds are a good option for outdoor adventures too, but most times I choose the portable speaker. Why?… Because I don’t want to miss the enchanting sounds of the outdoors as I venture through unsuspecting territory.
The technology has improved so greatly you can now get a big, clear sound all from such a small, lightweight speaker. Attach it to your backpack or belt and the most wonderful sound of music is with you anywhere outdoors!
My hiking backpack with portable speaker attached and my MP3 player that I usually keep handy inside my pants or vest pocket.
Now go on and gear up with your favorite music and take that hike! It’s time to exercise your body, heart and soul.
Who knows? Your next long walk outdoors just might be the most adventurous and inspired journey to get that positive change of pace you’ve been longing for.
Be safe,
